10 January 2010: Life's A Ditch

Today we went back out the the frozen tundra/winter wonderland. The skies were bluer, the sun was brighter and I was ready for more photography! It was even more magical than than yesterday...that is until I drove into a ditch! I assumed the edge of the road was solid because it was a few hundred feet before...but alas it was a soft shoulder. Thank goodness for AAA...they were there in about 20 minutes. Bill napped in the car while we waited and I walked around the road doing guess what...taking photographs!

We were coming home yesterday evening and luckily I spotted something strange on the side of the house. As we ran over to look at this oddity, we realized we had water leaking from the outside water spout. After we figured out how to turn the water off with the help of our neighbor Tom, I realized how interestingly the ice had formed. So this morning, when I went to check on it, I decided to use it at the photo of the day. The photo above is a close up and the one below is the big picture of the mess/beauty.

25 February 2009 Photo: I'm Melting...MELTING!!!

I love icecles and and have fond memories of breaking them off as a kid to eat and smash on the ground. I have been trying to take pictures of them all year for this blog. I have seen icecles of all shapes and sizes including one that started at the roof of the house and went all the way down to the ground. I took many photos of them, but I never liked the ones I took...until today!

The sun was catching the icecle just right that it was starting to melt and believe me that is a miracle beacause it is still cold! It took several tries, but I caught a finally drip in the frame of the photograph. I could hear the voice of the wicked witch in my head as I was watching it drip...I'm melting...melting! Truth be told - I am ready for them to melt all the way, ever last one of them. Bring on the spring!!!!

29 January 2009 Photo: Champ the Lake Monster

On my way home today, I took the ferry across Lake Champlain. It is something that I have done several times over the last few years and it never gets boring. I love seeing the Adirondacks on one side and the Green Mountains on the other side. Since it is the dead of winter, the lake is frozen. While I prefer this trip in the fall when the colors are vibrant, the winter is pretty cool too.

My friend Brad was also on his way to NY so I convinced him to go on the ferry as well. As we hit the ice and watched it/heard it crack, Brad asked..."Haven't these people ever seen the movie, Titanic?" Ha! I gave him a lesson on Champ, The Lake Monster. If look close at this picture, you can almost see Champ lurking in the deep dark icy waters, can't you? If you can't, maybe Champ is visiting his cousin Nessie over in Scotland for the winter.
