10 June 2010: Lonely

The straw flowers are back for the summer baskets on our house! These are the best flowers because you really have to try to kill them!

A quick little night shot using only the ambient light bouncing off of the fog!

21 August 2009 Photo: Distorted Memories

So I today I found out that one of my photos had been accepted and won (something) for the NY State Fair. I am just thrilled. I don't know yet what it has won as it could be anything from honorable mention to first place. Whatever it is, I am so excited as there are many people that enter the fair contest. I remember the only other photography contest that I entered was in high school at our local library and I got an honorable mention for a photo titled Beach Fronds. It is ironic because the picture that was chosen and won for this contest is also taken at a beach. I guess the beach is truly a magical place for me both in reality and in photographs.

The photo chosen is actually a former "photo of the day" from back in January - it is the second picture here: http://wide-angle-lens.blogspot.com/2009/01/27-january-2009-photos-serinity-by-sea.html It has been this blog that has really gotten me back into photography and has pushed me to really think about how I can make this hobby a more integral part of my life again. It also led me to joining the Syracuse Photography Association which is filled with amazingly talented people who share great feedback and advice.

So if you are in the area of central NY, come to the fair and check out the photo exhibit!

28 July 2009 Photo: Charlotte's Web

I was playing around with a photo aperture technique called Bokeh. The little lights in the background is the effect I was looking for but I wish I was able to get the spider with less harsh light but I ruined the web by mistake so the photo shoot was over. Oh well, still kind of cool...well except for the big creepy spider! You can learn more about bokeh at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

3 May 2009 Photo: Nights In White Lilacs

I decided it was time for a night photograph. When I walked outside to see what was to be seen through the camera lens, I got a slight wift of the lilacs. Taken with a flash, I captured the brightness of the little white flowers against the darkness of the night.

4 March 2009 Photo: Campus Camera

With as much time as I spend on college campuses in the Northeast, I realized that I have not take many pictures on those campuses.  As I was driving through Amherst, MA tonight after dinner, I thought this evening shot with the tree shadow was intersting.

5 January 2009 Photo: Night Vision

Today just about got away from me with the craziness of getting ready for the semester. In trying to keep with my photo a day project, I decided to go outside and do some night photos - not a big deal if you live in Florida, but in Central NY I could get frostbite. Of course it may have made sense to put a jacket on before I went outside.

As you can see, I fibbed a little when I said we were taking down our Christmas decorations...we got all of the inside ones down (that took about 4 hours) but didn't get to the outside decorations yet so this was the subject of todays photo. I did used a tripod and the timer to keep it in focus. The more I look at this photo, I think we may actually leave those lights up as we use that patio a lot when it's warmer!
