21 September 2009 Photo: Partly Foggy Chance Of Glowing

I had a beautiful drive from NY to MA as the sun was rising through the fog. The glowing disc was eclipsed by the thick fog and made the sky glow. I don't love this photo but with 5 hours of driving and 7 hours of meetings/fairs I didn't have a whole lot of time to shoot.

My long drive home today was made less painful because of the amazing full moon setting over the Adirondacks as the sun was rising over the Green Mountains. It was just magical as the mist hovered just about the ground and the darkness turned to light. The views as I crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry were breathtaking. I wish every morning could start like this one!

The humidity is finally gone and the fall seems to have arrived - at least temporarily. I woke up this morning with a chill in the air and mist coming off the water. I am eager for the fall as it is my favorite time of the year but sad to see the long days of summer come to end.

Is the saying true?

In order to understand why “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning” can predict the weather, we must understand more about weather and the colors in the sky.

Usually, weather moves from west to east, blown by the westerly trade winds. This means storm systems generally move in from the West.

The colors we see in the sky are due to the rays of sunlight being split into colors of the spectrum as they pass through the atmosphere and ricochet off the water vapor and particles in the atmosphere. The amounts of water vapor and dust particles in the atmosphere are good indicators of weather conditions. They also determine which colors we will see in the sky.

During sunrise and sunset the sun is low in the sky, and it transmits light through the thickest part of the atmosphere. A red sky suggests an atmosphere loaded with dust and moisture particles. We see the red, because red wavelengths (the longest in the color spectrum) are breaking through the atmosphere. The shorter wavelengths, such as blue, are scattered and broken up.

Red sky at night, sailors delight.When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning. A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

I was getting ready to recycle this bottle of Prosecco and the early morning light looked so inviting. This it the sparkling wine from Italy that Bill bought me for my 40th Birthday Spa Weekend at Mirbeau. I love the reflection of the sunrise and trees on the bottom of the bottle.

25 April 2009 Photos: Itsy Bitsy Sunrising Spiders

We got up early this morning and went to watch the sunrise on Skaneateles Lake. Bill took me to Mirbeau Inn and Spa to celebrate my birthday which was last month. While we were walking in town witnessed the bright sun rising over the church in town and also caught the itsy bitsy spider preparing her breakfast. The sun was so bright, I did not get the web in the photo, but I like the way the spider and flies appear to just be hanging in mid air.

The day turned out to be in the upper 80s and we enjoyed the rest of the day with a picnic on the lake, relaxing at the spa and wandering through the stores in town.

Leaving for the gym today, I was greeted by an amazing burst of color peaking over the reservoir. I am hoping this brightness continues as I keep thinking positive thoughts.

When I opened the curtains to check the weather, I was welcomed by the sun rising between the buildings downtown. While it only gives me a narrow slice of the beauty of the Portland area, it inspires me to go out and explore if I get a free moment during the conference.

The ocean...the sea...crashing waves...sunrises...sunsets...sand beneath my feet..warm sun on my face...HOME!

Anytime I am near the ocean, I feel at home. Whether it is in Westerly, RI or on the other side of the globe, just seeing the water makes me feel at ease. Undoubtedly, if I could live anywhere, it would be on the ocean. Not near the ocean but on it. Hear the waves crash in the morning is musical and powerful. I live near a small lake now but it is not the same. No waves...no smell of stinky seaweed...no salt in the air.

I put up two photos today taken in Newcastle, NH. The one below I played with in terms of the focus but the one above is pretty much how I saw it this morning.
