7 March 2010: Sleigh Bells Ring...Are You Listening?

Bill and I finally went on a horse drawn sleigh ride at Highland State Park. I have wanted to do this since I moved here and read about it. It was a beautiful day, sun shining, temperatures rising and snow starting to melt. The ride was not quite as Dickens-esque as I had made it out to be in my head but still it was nice. We will have to go back at some point for a night ride as I am sure that would be even more beautiful!

5 March 2010: Snow Dog

Mona doesn't always quite get that she is not a teacup dog that can walk on top of the icy topped snow. Bill dug out a path for her to "do her business" but she insists on exploring further and falling through the snow!

27 February 2010: Delaware Water Gap

We made a quick stop at the Delaware Water Gap on the way home from NYC. It was not quite as picturesque as I remember but then again there was a lot of snow to impede our ability to get around!

26 February 2010: Hot, Cold and Extinct

Snowmageddon stranded us in NYC for an extra day! We enjoyed the extra time we had in the city by visiting the Natural History Museum and building some mini snow people! Building the snow people was so fun both because I felt like a kid again (with these aches and pains since I turned 40 that is saying a lot) and it was so amazing to watch the reactions of the people who walked by us in the park. Everyone, old and young, loved the little snow family. Several people stopped to take pictures of our creations (you can see one of them taking their own picture while protecting herself with an umbrella). The little kids quickly said they wanted to make some too (sorry to those parents). We were happy and sad when we went back through the park several hours later. Our snow family was no longer standing - I don't know if they were murdered by vandals or poor construction by the help. However, we did notice several other snow people have been erected in various states and sizes throughout the park. We were happy to see that we were an inspiration to some!

We also went into the Museum of Natural History. We went in the the butterfly house. It was so hot in there especially when coming from snowmageddon. We had on turtlenecks, sweaters, fleece. I was a bit overheated by the time we left our new butterfly friends. Luckily nothing else was "alive" in the museum but then again, we were NOT there at night!

23 February 2010: Snowicane

Rumor has it there is a snowicane (snow+hurricane) coming to NYC on Thursday night...thank goodness I can be here for that! I am hoping for another snow fraud. It was a long, rainy drive into the city so this picture is actually a fraud...it was taken last year. Sorry to all my faithful fans but I am hoping for some good NYC photos later this week especially if there is a snowicane HAHAHA. I love then names they make up for these nor'easter - so far this year we've had "snowmageddon" and "snowpocalypse" and now "snowicane"!

10 Feb 2010: Snowmageddon?

There was a lot of hype about the snow storm that was supposed to hit New England. It didn't happen. It was pretty but not "snowmageddon" - at least where I was!

25 January 2010: Fallen Feathers

I have had a little obsession with feathers this month. This was I found on the ground while visiting Hamilton College.

10 January 2010: Life's A Ditch

Today we went back out the the frozen tundra/winter wonderland. The skies were bluer, the sun was brighter and I was ready for more photography! It was even more magical than than yesterday...that is until I drove into a ditch! I assumed the edge of the road was solid because it was a few hundred feet before...but alas it was a soft shoulder. Thank goodness for AAA...they were there in about 20 minutes. Bill napped in the car while we waited and I walked around the road doing guess what...taking photographs!

9 January 2010: Frozen Tundra

We ventured out today for a drive because the sun actually came out for a bit and the sky was blue.  Amazing after 12 straight days of snow!  It was frigid out.  I had a hard time getting the camera to work, not to mention my fingers.  The pains of photography are never-ending...first I broke my ankle and now frost bite!

5 January 2010: Only A Foot(ish)

Apparently Syracuse and Fulton, NY have been mentioned several times on The Today Show and I have had a few people contact me asking if we were buried in snow. Luckily I live about 20 minutes south of Syracuse which is 30 minutes south of Fulton. Fulton has gotten about 4 feet of snow, Syracuse about 2 feet and here in Jamesville...ONLY a foot.

Luckily we have good and plenitful snow plow drivers so our roads are clear and there has not been a run on milk and bread at the grocery store. We are working on day NINE of snow...luckily it is the light fluffy lake effect snow. The kind that does not accumulate quickly and come down even when the sun is out!

4 January 2010: Just Keep Snowing...

Just Keep Snowing...What does it do...It snows...It LOVES to snow...LA LA LA LA LA LA. Sub-reference to Finding Nemo and Dory's rendition of "Just keep swimming".

It has been snowing here since I returned from RI on December 28! Not heavy snow...just annoying constant snow.

3 January 2010: Window To The Cold

365/3Yeah...so it's another window looking outside. It is NEGATIVE 8 out there with the wind chill. I am not venturing out in that cold if I don't have to!

30 December 2009 Photo: Frequent Flyer Miles

Memories of childhood came flooding back when I saw this sled at a store in town. Obviously it is not an original but I immediately associated this Flexible Flyer with hours of fun in Wilcox Park in Westerly, RI. Did you have a Flexible Flyer? Did you ever do the running belly flop onto the sled? I was out running errands today and froze...how is it I stayed outside for hours upon hours playing in the snow as a child and never thought about how cold it was?

Here is a little history about the Flexible Flyer: http://www.ehow.com/about_5087180_history-antique-flexible-flyer-sleds.html

29 December 2009 Photo: Footprints On My Heart

The snow has returned and we picked up Mona at the dog sitter's yesterday. She had a good Christmas but is not so thrilled with the snow. Her poor little paws get so cold because she is one of those dogs that does not have much fur on the bottom of her feet. We may have to buy her some little booties.

6 December 2009 Photo: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow

On my way to my meeting for work, I popped in to see some friends who have made an appearance on the blog before - the Dunne Family. Finn is growing like crazy and is super cute! I took this one with my iphone but I totally love it because Finn is so excited to see himself on the computer. Thanks for a fun afternoon Molly, Tom and Finn - it is always great to catch up!

The photo below was taken en route of all big fluffy snow. We barely got any snow in Syracuse which is just fine with me!

16 October 2009 Photo: Weather Gone Wild

We got a dusting of snow in the wee hours of the morning. How do I know when it happened...I was up from 3:30 - 5:00 AM while it was snowing. It did no even cover all of the grass so I am not sure you can even count it as "the first snow" of the season. Either way, it is October 16th which is WAY TOO EARLY for this white stuff. So please go away. Actually the sun is already out and shining so hopefully it will be gone before too long!

4 April 2009 Photo: ¿Dónde está el sol?

We got home on Friday after a week in NYC. It was nice to be home and sleep in my own bed; however, when I woke on this fine Saturday it was cold and rainy. Within a few hours, the rain switched to snow. It wasn't the kind of snow that stuck on the ground but there were flakes on my car. I thought it was spring! My tulips are coming up outside (at least they were), the grass is turning green, the trees are budding and snow snOW SNOW was falling.

Luckily the sunflowers that my sister, Anne Marie, sent for my birthday were still alive in my house. Even though I did not have any sun outside, the bright yellow flowers inside made my day a little brighter.

26 February 2009 Photo: GPS and Mud Season

While I was leaving a school in the "country" (aka the sticks), I set my GPS to get me to my next location. I have become an idiot in directions since I got this technology last year. I knew where I was going and how to get back to the highway but like that informercial about an oven...I set it and forget it.

Next thing I know I am driving down a dirt road in the middle of the spring thaw and the mud was thick and deep. My first experience of "mud season" was when I went to school in Keene. We don't have mud season in RI. I had flashbacks of getting stuck in the mud and getting really dirty. Luckily that did not happen this time but I did see this cool barn while I was driving through the mud.
